1.)
Pogo Christmas Sunday page
Dec. 24th, 1967, signed, 59,5 x 40,3 cm
€ 16.500.- ($ 22,770)
I have bought
this page in 2003 from Bruce Hamilton who had bought it from the Walt
Kelly estate through Sotheby’s auction house in the late 1990’s. It
comes with a signed “Letter of Attestation” by Hamilton and with a piece
of cardboard that was originally attached to the back of the frame. It
says: “For Ann, with love, and many, many thanks from Stephanie, Steven,
Andrew, John and Walt… Christmas 1967”. The art -in its final form as
hand-colored by Kelly- is reproduced in Brian Walker’s book, The
Comics Since 1945 and appears full page in the tabloid (vertical)
format, achieved by dropping the middle panel. This beautiful Christmas
page is thought to be the only Pogo Sunday page Walt Kelly ever
hand-colored. |
